#sidepride

In 2013, Dr. Joe Kort coined the term "side" to describe gay men who don't engage in penetrative sex. This gives them a way to talk about their sexual interests in a culture that’s dominated by a top/bottom binary.

He created a Facebook group called “Side Guys” in which more than 8,000 men have found others like themselves, and in 2020 Grindr added "side" as a sexual preference, legitimizing the term and helping "sides" overcome derision from other gay men. Other apps have followed suit since.

As a part of our effort to promote acceptance of those who are “anal optional” or just aren’t interested in penetrative sex at all, we’re going to use the #sidepride hashtag in on social media posts and encourage fellow sides to do the same.
